In the gospels, Christ chose 12 apostles to rule with him over the 12 tribes of Israel in his kingdom. When Judas fell, the apostles chose Matthias to take his place.1 Their number was complete, so, why Paul? Paul’s ministry is separate from that of the 12. God used Paul to reveal “the dispensation of the grace of God” to the Gentiles.2 Paul, in Romans 11:13, says, “I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.” The risen Lord appeared to Paul several times during his ministry and progressively revealed3 the truths specifically about and for the church of today, the Body of Christ, in the dispensation of grace.
