The 12 apostles preached the gospel of the kingdom with power and signs to validate their message, yet they understood nothing about the cross. The risen Christ then appeared to the apostles and gave them the Holy Ghost so that they would have the authority and understanding to carry on his ministry after his ascension. Luke 24:45 says that Christ “opened their understanding . . . .”
